Professor Byrnes:

Mr.
Byrnes has been a faculty member in the
School of Arts and Science and Criminal
Justice since 1999. Prior to joining FIU’s
faculty, he taught at Florida State’s School
of Criminology. During his career, he
assumed the principle responsibility for
developing and maintaining project models
for the Community Base Policing program at
the Miami Dade Police Department. Mr. Byrnes
has conducted a plethora of total quality
management related research projects,
assisting agencies in restyling service
delivery in various governments. In
addition, Mr. Byrnes performed due diligence
activities for project development and
acquisition activities including performance
project risk assessments for Dade County
government. He also helped develop the
“decremental budgeting” model for Dade
County.
While at Florida State University,
Professor Byrnes wrote and developed a city wide alarm ordinance for
the city of Tallahassee. He also helped develop the current arrest
affidavit utilized by all police departments in the state of
Florida. His teaching and research interests include: Theories of
Crime, Global Terrorism, Domestic Violence Issues, Criminal Justice
Policies, along with the use of force applications. Mr. Byrnes has
lectured on Terrorism to various groups and is currently working on
a research project on the efficacy of counter terrorism measures.
Professor Byrnes also serves as a Journal reviewer for the Southern
Criminal Justice Association
Students
are expected AND required to be courteous to others in the class,
including the professor. Any student engaged in a disruptive behavior will
be asked to leave the class. Disruptive behaviors include (but are not
limited to): arriving to class late, talking with a classmate while others
are talking (including the professor), wearing headphones/listening to
music, reading or working on materials other than those specifically
dealing with the class. Finally, students are asked to turn off cell
phones and beepers or (at least) to switch them to vibrating mode for the
duration of class.

SYLLABI: All course syllabi are available for
you to print at your leisure and will ONLY be available thru
this website. I will not be issuing them at anytime during the
semester! In this website you will find all materials needed to
assist you with this class. It contains lecture notes, outlines,
powerpoints and vocabulary terms!
EXAMS: In addition to saving printing costs
on exams and to provide a quicker outcome for you the student we are
giving all of your exams on Blackboard this summer. The only thing
that you will need to do is log onto
http://online.fiu.edu/login.html enter your ID# and your
password click on the class, and begin your exam! If you have any
issues, problems and malfunctions during the exam process contact ME

assist you with your needs!
ONLINE LECTURE: Each term this seems to be an
issue with some students, online lecture simply put, means you DO
NOT have formal class that particular day. It means that you have
independent study time on your own, and may do so when you would
like. Simply review the chapter we are working on, check out the
notes, outlines, powerpoints etc available to you on this website.
This material is NOT available on WEBCT and or Blackboard.
These syllabi will NOT be available
from your professor, you can only receive them from this website as
the University attempts to cut costs!
