In an article published recently in the Journal of Criminal Justice (Steiner and Schwartz, 2006) the Department of Criminal Justice at FIU ranked 13th nationally in average publications per faculty member between 2000 and 2004. When the publications were weighted by equally dividing each article among the number of authors, FIU's Department of Criminal Justice ranked 10th nationally. The journals used in this study for ranking purposes were Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice, Criminal Justice and Behavior, Journal of Quantitative Criminology, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, and Crime and Delinquency. These journals are considered the leading journals in criminology and criminal justice.

Professor Ellen Cohn received the Gold President's Volunteer Service Award from the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation at a ceremony this morning at Miami-Dade Police Department. 

Professor Ramiro Martinez was honored with an Alumni Achievement Award from Texas State University-San Marcos for his work in the areas of immigration and crime. 

Professor Luis Salas received an additional $2.9 million this fiscal year to continue work on his project “Colombia Justice Reform and Modernization Program.” Professor Salas has an additional proposal for $3.7 million pending on this grant.

 

A portion of SW 8th Street, from 107th Avenue to 117th Avenue was named “Dr. Jose A. Marques Boulevard” in honor of the late attorney, professor, and founding member of the criminal justice program at Florida International University.
